Er, hi?

The world is deeply depressing. Pity the *wank communities are dead; could really use them right about now.

(no subject)

I have removed post moderation at FW, CW, and OTFW. This would be an issue if anyone were actually using JF.com, but, since only [personal profile] darksumomo is, it ought to be fine.

With no notifications email that something's sitting in the queue, someone needs to go in and check manually. And "someone" appears to be "me"; that's not happening.

So, I just saw Avengers: Endgame

Because the thing I wanted most for Mother’s Day was time by myself. With one exception, I enjoyed the movie.

I have five words: Captain Marvel doesn’t need help.

If they’d had two, it would have been fine, but dragging in all of them just made her look weak, and Captain Marvel isn’t weak.

Yegads!

The password reset function is working again!

I changed it to something really secure awhile back, then promptly forgot what it was. I tried to reset it, but, alas, the email notifications weren't working. Oopsy.

I deleted my livejournal because I wasn't comfortable with having the servers in Russia and agreeing that nothing I posted could violate Russian law (since I have no idea what Russian law says).

Anyway, hi. Anyone out there?

New lawsuit strategy! (Courtesy of Donald Trump)

(1) Say a bunch of nasty things about racial/ethnic/gender/etc. group

(2) Demand anyone associated with any of these groups recuse self from case due to "bias."

If he ended up with a judge of Northern European descent, you know he'd just claim said judge was biased due to being a descendant of socialists.

Ah yes.

Trevor Noah had an emergency appendectomy.

This section in particular brought back memories:
Noah went on to explain the absurdity of the entire situation: He was periodically fainting from the pain even while a nurse insisted he fill out his paperwork before he could get treated. "The lady's like, 'Can you fill out the form?' And I'm like, 'Well, no, I'm dying.' And she's like, 'Yeah, but I need you to fill out the form first,'" Noah said.

Having had a broken wrist* and broken elbow**, I remember this very well. There you are, in agony, and you've got paperwork to complete. Which paperwork depends on the emergency room you're at, but I seem to recall the usual fill in your name, address, and insurance information when I broke my elbow. Just *try* to do that when you can't move your elbow without passing out. Just *try.*

*distal radius fracture; this is really a distinction without a difference.

**type II radial head fracture that also involved breaking off the coronoid process on the ulna. Again, a distinction without a difference, but at least I didn't break the humerus.

Ah, photoshop.

I keep seeing this ad. So, of course it's amusing that her waist is about the size of her neck. I also particularly enjoy the upper part of her right arm. Clearly this is all totally natural! No photoshop here!

Skylanders.

My three-year old loves Skylanders. This is my husband's fault; he collects things, and was fascinated by the collect-them-all nature of Skylanders.

On the upside, it's the only way we've made any progress on potty training: 3yo can buy more Skylanders from the "Skylander store" (a shelf in the closet) by earning stars.

He plays with the Skylanders, too. Chill introduces herself to Trap Shadow and Crusher, and then all of the Skylanders talk to the Thomas trains about standard- and narrow-gauge tracks. Then everyone acts out "Hero of the Rails."

I need to track down "Scratch" to add to the Skylander store. He thinks she's really, really cool looking, but she seems to be difficult to find for any sort of reasonable price.

Bitch, are you for real?

I'm really not sure why I read slate at all. Sigh.

But in 2008, Baby Mama was the first flowering of a linguistic trend now in full bloom across all media: that of prefacing a statement with bitch for rhetorical effect.

I'm torn on saying she can't possibly be this clueless and knowing the author of the article actually can and has been similarly clueless in the past. (Specifically, she had no clue about the origin of "Drink the Kool-Aid".) She goes on to claim that Snoop Lion's "Bitch, please" is following this trend-- which, in her world, originated in 2008, apparently with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

The popular use of "Bitch, are you for real?" comes from "The Human Tornado", the sequel to "Dolemite". Blaxploitation, cult classic, pimp subculture, mid '70s. "Bitch, please" comes out of the same subculture. Heavy influence on '90s rappers and so on. Snoop Lion credits "Dolemite", and several other rappers sampled from it.

Whether or not you think this is a defensible use of language, it didn't start in 2008, and it certainly didn't start with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. It bothers me that she actually thinks something that came from a specific black subculture arose much more recently in a movie written by white women, and that black rappers are following that trend. I can understand being ignorant of Jim Jones (if you're young enough, it probably never came up), but the ubiquitous "Bitch, please" meme was in place before 2008. Minimal research should have turned this up.

Can update community settings now.

With much thanks to [personal profile] system: I can now manage community member lists to add admins.

Communities.

So, currently I am listed as admin on fandom_wank, otf_wank, clairvoyantwank, and fandom_lounge (oops on that last one).

These communities previously said they had open membership, but didn't. When you tried to join, it told you you needed to have your membership approved by the administrator, but there was no administrator. I've switched all of the communities to actually be open membership (I think), BUT:

I don't see any join requests that were submitted while the community didn't have open membership, and I cannot approve any.

for fandom_wank, otf_wank, and clairvoyantwank: please remind me whether the moderator email was mods@thefannish .net? .com? .org? and I can change it (when I was added as an administrator, it apparently set to my email, and I need to enter my password to change it; ETA: used wayback to get comm info and now know this; will change email when member list is working). Also, if snacky, sep, sorchar, phosfate, et al would please join the communities now that this is possible, I can set you up as admin+moderator. (ETA: I am concerned this might not work because the communities are behaving strangely. Still, it's worth a try.)

f_l isn't my community, but if the f_l mods can go ahead and join the fandom_lounge, then I'm happy to set you up as administrators and remove myself [as above, I need to know what the community email should be, since I appear to have it as mine at the moment].

ETA: Please tell me if you are still not able to join these communities. The community member list is acting very strangely.
